Report by John Patrick Heeley
Wigan Athletic came from behind to claim an impressive 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest at the DW Stadium, ending the visitors' unbeaten start to the Championship season.
Goals from Shaun Maloney and Jordi Gómez overturned an early strike from Andy Reid as Owen Coyle's side produced one of their best displays of the campaign.
Forest made the perfect start after just eight minutes. Andy Reid delivered a moment of real quality, curling a superb effort into the net to put the visitors ahead and silence the home crowd.
The goal gave Billy Davies' side an early advantage, but Wigan responded positively rather than allowing their heads to drop.
The equaliser arrived six minutes later. Marc-Antoine Fortune burst forward and was brought down inside the penalty area by Jack Hobbs, leaving referee Craig Pawson with little option but to award a penalty.
Shaun Maloney stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to bring the Latics level at 1-1.
With momentum firmly on their side, Wigan began to dominate possession and create the better opportunities.
Fortuné caused continual problems for the Forest defence with his direct running and physical presence, while midfielders James McCarthy and Jordi Gomez controlled the tempo.
The home side's pressure was rewarded in the 35th minute. Fortune again played a crucial role, controlling and turning before unleashing a powerful shot from distance.
Goalkeeper Karl Darlow produced an excellent save, but the rebound fell kindly to Gomez, who reacted quickest to slot home from close range and give Wigan a deserved lead.
Forest attempted to respond after the break and enjoyed more possession than they had managed in the first half.
However, Wigan's defence, marshalled by Leon Barnett and Thomas Rogne, stood firm.
The visitors pushed for an equaliser but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against an organised Latics back line.
As the match entered its closing stages, Wigan managed the game effectively, introducing fresh legs from the bench and denying Forest time and space in dangerous areas.
Despite some late pressure from the visitors, Latics held on to secure all three points and continue their adaptation to life back in the Championship following relegation from the Premier League.
