Wigan Athletic continued their unbeaten start to the season with a superb 3-1 victory at West Ham.

Two goals from Nathan Ellington and one from strike partner Jason Roberts ensured that Latics deservedly took all three points and in doing so return to the top of the table, albeit with only 3 games played.

Paul Jewell named the same starting line up for the third consecutive game with the only change coming on the bench as Emerson Thome's name appeared on the team sheet for the first time since joining the club.

It didn't take long for Wigan to find the back of the net and show their hosts that they meant business.

With only 4 minutes on the clock David Wright stole down the right flank and sent over a sublime ball into the box, finding NATHAN ELLINGTON who rose above Andy Melville to power a header past Stephen Bywater in the West Ham goal.

Matt Jackson tested Bywater with a header from a Jimmy Bullard centre and Hammers defender Tonas Repka's wayward back pass caused concern for his keeper who had to scramble the ball to safety.

Anton Ferdinand found Matthew Etherington in the area but his header flew over Filan's bar with the Wigan keeper hardly troubled by the move.

Jason Roberts then fired over the woodwork from a Lee McCulloch ball and then the Scottish winger almost got on the scoresheet minutes later but his header was well saved by the keeper.

Wigan continued to pressure their opponents and were duly rewarded for their efforts on the stroke of half time when JASON ROBERTS raced onto an Ellington flick on and rounded the advancing Bywater before sliding the ball into an empty goal.

Alan Pardew replaced Ukraine striker Sergei Rebrov and Marlon Harewood during the break, Luke Chadwick and former Wigan target Bobby Zamora replacing the two strikers.

However the game was put out of West Ham's reach just before the hour mark when Gary Teale broke down the right wing before whipping a inch perfect cross over to NATHAN ELLINGTON who doubled his afternoon's tally with a fine header.

West Ham's consolation arrived in the 69th minute but it came too late to salvage anything from the game.

Former Wimbledon midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker sent a low ball across goal which BOBBY ZAMORA attempted to back heel past Filan but has he fell to ground under challenge the 23-year-old got another bite of the cherry, prodding the ball over the line from 5 yards out.

Wigan had a couple of minor scares in the closing stages but managed to weather the storm and could quite easily have added further goals themselves but for Bywater who pulled off a couple of decent saves.
