LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

WIGAN ATHLETIC vs HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

 28th February 2026

WEIR (WE ARE) ON THE RISE

Jensen Weir's 62nd-minute strike earned Latics a huge three points at the Brick Community Stadium to make it back-to-back wins at home for the first time since August.

It took until the second half for the game's opener to be scored, despite the visitors hitting the woodwork twice. A flurry of corners saw Latics' pressure on the Huddersfield defence eventually pay off when a loose ball fell to Jensen Weir on the edge of the area, who struck a low shot that wrong footed Nicholls in the Town goal following a wicked deflection off the unlucky Harkness.

Almost two weeks have passed since Gary Caldwell returned after almost a decade away from the Club, and although it has been a bittersweet return in terms of results - one win and one defeat - the heart, fight and desire appear to have returned giving a platform to build on in the final 14 league games.

Caldwell made four changes to the side following last week's eventful outing at Stockport County, with Will Aimson, Owen Moxon, Raphael and Dara Costelloe returning for Steven Sessegnon, who is suspended, Matt Smith, Joe Hungbo and the Huddersfield Town loanee Joe Taylor.

Latics looked to impose themselves on the game from the off and pressed high up the pitch and their efforts nearly gained an early breakthrough when Costelloe latched onto Saydee's pass and tried to knock it past Lee Nicholls in the Terriers goal, but the former Wigan man got his body in the way and gathered.

The visitors grew into the game and almost had the game's opener when Humphreys got beyond the Latics defence to cut a ball back to Ryan Hardie. He connected with a first-time toe poke that cannoned back off the post before Aimson got back on the line to clear any danger. Huddersfield then hit the woodwork again when the ball found its way out to Bali Mumba inside the area, his effort deflected off Raphael and onto the bar before efforts from Alfie May and Marcus Harness were blocked by some desperate last-ditch defending.

Half Time; Wigan Athletic 0-0 Huddersfield Town.

Wigan had the majority of possession in the first period but despite Murray providing some dangerous crosses they had largely failed to threaten. However, the half time break allowed Caldwell to pass instructions over to his side and send them out raring to go for the second half, and the arrival of Joe Hungbo sparked Latics into life. Racing up-field, Costelloe was allowed time and space to eventually cut back inside and feed Saydee who took one touch to open his body up before striking towards goal, with the effort taking a deflection and trickling past the post.

Latics were suddenly looking a lot more threatening, and their more energetic approach led to a flurry of corners. The pressure eventually paid off when Fraser Murray whipped a ball into the area and found Wright at the back post, he passed the ball inside to WEIR on the edge of the area, who fired first time towards goal and, courtesy of a deflection off Harkness, into the bottom corner.

Wigan were now growing in confidence and moved the ball around well to effectively deny Town any chance of building up momentum towards an equaliser. It was only really when the board went up for six minutes of stoppage time that Huddersfield started throwing caution to the wind. The increased tempo nearly found that elusive goal when Harness checked inside and unleashed a wicked, curling effort at goal, which Sam Tickle got behind with a strong palm before collecting at the second attempt.

The Wigan defence, superbly marshalled by Kerr and the returning Aimson held on for a huge three points to push themselves up the table and out of the relegation zone ahead of next weekend's trip to Bloomfield Road to face Blackpool.

Full Time; Wigan Athletic 1-0 Huddersfield Town.
