10-MEN WIGAN SUNK BY LATE OWEN WINNER

Newcastle United continued their strong start to the 2007-08 Premier League season with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Wigan Athletic at St James' Park.

Michael Owen's late header finally broke the visitors' resistance and secured all three points for Sam Allardyce's side in front of a crowd of 50,461.

The Magpies controlled much of the contest from the outset and created the clearer chances.

Owen threatened early when he latched onto a flick-on from Mark Viduka, only for Chris Kirkland to make a fine save.

The Wigan goalkeeper was called into action repeatedly throughout the afternoon, keeping Newcastle at bay with a series of impressive stops.

Newcastle felt they should have been awarded a penalty midway through the first half when former Magpie Titus Bramble appeared to handle the ball in the area, but referee Steve Bennett waved away the appeals.

The home side continued to press, with Viduka, Nicky Butt and Alan Smith all going close before Steven Taylor headed against the crossbar just before half-time.

The game swung further in Newcastle's favour immediately after the restart when Wigan's Kevin Kilbane was sent off for a second bookable offence in the opening minute of the second half.

Reduced to ten men, Chris Hutchings' side were forced into a defensive battle as Newcastle increased the pressure.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Wigan defended resolutely.

Kirkland produced several more saves, while defenders Titus Bramble and Andreas Granqvist threw themselves in front of efforts on goal.

Newcastle also saw two goals ruled out for offside during a frustrating afternoon for the home attack.

However, the breakthrough finally arrived three minutes from time.

Obafemi Martins delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area and Owen rose to head beyond Kirkland from close range, sending the home supporters into celebration and ensuring Newcastle's dominance was rewarded.

Wigan could not muster a response in the closing moments and Newcastle comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to record a narrow but deserved victory.

The result maintained the Magpies' unbeaten start to the campaign, while Latics were left to reflect on a disciplined defensive display that ultimately yielded no reward.
