Although this looks like a comprehensive victory by a fantastic Everton team, it was so far from being that.
The visitors were lacking in ideas and Wigan yet again, through the lack of strike power and confidence, didn't seize this opportunity to put to bed a poor Toffees side.
Wigan as usual started bright in the first 25 minutes with efforts from Valencia, McCulloch and Heskey, but none were clinical enough to score as Howard made easy saves.
As the half went on, Everton got their game plan together and with the pitch seeming very cut up, it prompted Wigan to try the long ball tactics. Poor Heskey didn't touch the ball with his feet for nearly twenty minutes.
The second half saw the rain really kicking in and the wind rising, McCulloch saw a header land on the top of the net from a Skoko free kick and Everton's first chance had Yobo heading wide form a corner.
Johnson went in for the ball hard on Chris Kirkland, but it was he which needed treatment and a trip to hospital for what was suspected to be a broken ankle.
On 65 minutes Unsworth felled the Toffee's substitute Anichebe in the box and Howard Webb had no alternative than to award the spot kick.
Yes it wasn't Johnson for a change but the result was just the same, Arteta stepped up a powered the ball past Kirkland and it was 0-1.
Skoko rattled the crossbar with only ten minutes left to nearly level it, but it was Arteta who scored again on the break.
This time tapping in a neatly crossed ball from Phil Neville in the 92nd minute and effectively ending the game and a miserable January for Wigan.
The good things to come out of the match were the signs that Wigan still have a bit of passion.
One thing that has really been lacking of late is that battling mentality, but it was still there today.
Baines, Valencia, Skoko, Heskey, Landzaat and Kirkland (plus Taylor and Cotterill when they come on) showed that they won't lie down.
Disappointingly Lee McCulloch, usually one of the Latics players who give 110%, looked like he was still thinking about 'his dream' move to Rangers.
Kilbane and Hall's awful run of form continued, whilst David Unsworth up until giving the penalty away looks like he could be a useful signing.
This match just went to prove that Wigan desperately need some inspiration in the midfield and up front.
They have the option to buy Ellington, if Paul Jewell believes he is still the one, then pay it.
It is also said that Diop could also be signing soon for a reported £5m.
Again if these are going to sign, get it done quickly so that with this ten day break we can get them training and playing together.
