Wigan claimed their first league win of the 2026/27 season with an impressive 3-1 victory over MK Dons at The Brick Community Stadium.

Jensen Weir starred for the Latics with a superb brace, while captain Max Power also found the net as Gary Caldwell's side secured all three points.

The hosts started brightly and were unfortunate not to take an early lead. Fraser Murray struck the post before seeing a follow-up effort cleared off the line as Wigan piled pressure on the visitors.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 36th minute when Max Power fed Jensen Weir 25 yards from goal, and the midfielder unleashed a stunning strike into the roof of the net to open the scoring.

Wigan continued to threaten and thought they should have been awarded a penalty when Murray appeared to be pushed in the penalty area, but the referee waved away appeals.

MK Dons nearly levelled before half-time, only for debutant goalkeeper Joe Whitworth to produce an excellent point-blank save.

Latics doubled their advantage just three minutes after the restart. Power, already provider for the opening goal, turned finisher as he drilled a shot from outside the box into the corner to make it 2-0.

With MK Dons searching for a route back into the contest, Wigan struck decisively again in the 74th minute. Brad Burrowes laid the ball into the path of Weir, who smashed home another superb effort for his second goal of the night and Wigan's third.

The visitors managed a late consolation when substitute Aaron Collins scored in the 81st minute, but it did little to alter the outcome. Wigan comfortably saw out the closing stages to register a deserved win.

The result gave Wigan their first points of the League One campaign and provided a timely boost after three consecutive defeats to start the season and in doing so moved from the foot of the table.
