Wigan Athletic produced a ruthless display to sweep aside local rivals Oldham Athletic 6-0 and book their place in the quarter-finals of the Papa John's Trophy.

Leam Richardson's side dominated from start to finish, scoring three times in each half to secure one of their most emphatic victories of the season.

Despite enjoying plenty of possession in the opening stages, Wigan had to wait until the 28th minute for the breakthrough.

Max Power delivered a pinpoint free-kick into the penalty area and Tom Naylor rose highest to glance a header into the corner, giving the visitors a deserved lead.

The Latics doubled their advantage six minutes later.

Once again Power was the creator, sending over an excellent corner that Will Keane expertly headed into the far corner to leave Oldham facing an uphill task.

There was still time for a third before the interval and it came in spectacular fashion.

Power, already influential throughout the evening, stepped up from around 30 yards and unleashed a thunderous free-kick into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Danny Rogers with no chance.

The stunning strike capped an outstanding first-half performance from the Wigan midfielder.

Any hopes of an Oldham comeback disappeared almost immediately after the restart.

Gavin Massey added a fourth goal in the 47th minute, finishing clinically after Wigan carved open the home defence once more.

Wigan continued to press forward and were rewarded again midway through the second half.

Gwion Edwards got onto the scoresheet in the 64th minute before adding his second just three minutes later to complete the rout and make it six goals without reply.

Oldham, who fielded several younger players, struggled to cope with the quality and intensity of their League One opponents.

Wigan created numerous chances throughout the contest and fully deserved their commanding victory.

The tie was briefly interrupted late on when some home supporters entered the playing area in protest against the club's ownership, but the result had long since been decided.

Wigan comfortably progressed to the last eight, continuing their strong form across all competitions.
