McClean's late winner edges five-goal thriller

Wigan Athletic edged a thrilling League One contest at the Kassam Stadium, defeating Oxford United 3-2 thanks to a late winner from James McClean.

The victory strengthened Wigan's promotion challenge, while Oxford were left frustrated after battling back from two goals down.

The visitors made the perfect start, taking the lead after just eight minutes.

From a Max Power corner, Jack Whatmough headed the ball back across goal and Will Keane was on hand to nod home from close range.

Wigan continued to threaten and doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute when Power capitalised on a loose defensive clearance and fired a low effort beyond Simon Eastwood.

Oxford responded immediately. Just a minute after Power's strike, Gavin Whyte teed up Ryan Williams, who finished confidently to reduce the deficit and give the home side renewed belief heading into half-time.

The U's carried that momentum into the second half and deservedly found an equaliser on 59 minutes.

Whyte was again the provider, delivering a cross that Matty Taylor converted for his 11th goal of the season.

Having recovered from a two-goal deficit, Oxford looked capable of completing the turnaround.

However, Wigan had the final word. With four minutes remaining, substitute Stephen Humphrys drove forward from the left before creating the opening for James McClean, whose decisive finish restored the visitors' lead and ultimately secured all three points.

Oxford, already hampered by a lengthy injury and illness list, showed tremendous resilience and commitment throughout.

Yet Wigan's quality in key moments proved decisive in an entertaining five-goal encounter that showcased why both sides are among the promotion contenders in League One.
