Neil was signed by John Deehan on 7th November 1997 on loan from Grimsby Town.
He made his Latics League debut the following day against Southend United at Roots Hall in a game that resulted in a 0-1 defeat for the Blues.
Neil, then promptly got injured and never played another game for the Blues.
He was initially appointed as caretaker manager at Grimsby on 18th October 2009, following the sacking of manager and former Latics striker Mike Newell, a position that was eventually made permanent.
