Winston arrived at Springfield Park on a non contract basis from Carlisle United in March 1993. He was brought to the club by Dave Philpotts in a last ditch effort to save the Blues from relegation that season. He made his Latics League debut on 27th March 1992 against Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road in a game that resulted in a 2-1 victory for the Blues. Things were looking up when he scored the winning gaol in Latics’ next League game against Hull City at home, but from that moment on it was all down hill. He never scored for the club again and indeed the Blues failed to win any of their remaining eight games. The Blues were relegated for the first time in their Football League history. Winston made 10 League appearances and scored 1 League goal whilst at Springfield Park.
