Bob was signed by Ian McNeill from Blackpool in September 1981 following an injury to regular shot stopper John Brown.

Latics had tried to sign Neville Southall but he opted to join Bury instead.

By a strange quirk of fate Bob made his debut on 20th September 1980 against Bury at Springfield Park, in the first game that was ever televised since Latics’ election into the Football League.

Making his debut for the visitors was Neville Southall!

The Blues ran out 2-1 winners and rom that moment on Bob became the first choice keeper as John Brown struggled with an injury that was to eventually finish his professional career.

Bob’s Latics career also came to an abrupt halt when Larry Lloyd brought Roy Tunks to the club.

However, Bob made 46 League appearances before being released at the end of the 1982/83 season.
