He impressed Paul Jewell sufficiently to earn a one-year contract as understudy to John Filan. He first played for the club in a pre season friendly against Southport at Haig Avenue on 22nd July 2003. He came onto the field as a second half substitute for Filan and the Blues won the game 3-0.

He made his first team debut on 12th August 2003 in a 2-0 victory of Hull City at the JJB Stadium in a Carling Cup first round game. He made his Latics League debut on 3rd April 2004 in a home game against Wimbledon which Latics lost 0-1. By the end of the League campaign that was his only League appearance for the club. He stayed at the club as an emergency player and goalkeeping coach during Latics’ first season in the Premiership although he was never called on to add to his Latics career total before retiring from the game. He then became the goalkeeping coach at the JJB Stadium before following Paul Jewell to Derby County to take on the same role. When Jewell resigned as the Rams manager in December 2008 Gary also left the club and became the goalkeeping coach of Hartlepool United..
