Ian Seddon - Player Profile

Ian Wright Seddon was born in the village of Prestbury in Cheshire on the 14th October 1950.

He joined Bolton Wanderers at an early age and made his league debut as a substitute against Cardiff City at Ninian Park. He impressed enough to get a place in the starting XI a few days later in a home League Cup tie against Rotherham United.

Ian went on to make 64 league appearances for the Trotters and scored four goals during his four seasons at the club.

In 1972/73 Bolton were promoted as champions to Division two but Ian made only nine appearances (six of these were off the bench) and his transfer to Chester in September of 1973 saw him reestablish himself as a regular starter in the midfield. He was a mainstay of the Chester midfiekd that claimed promotion in 1974-75 but the following season he again found his playing time limited and in search of regular action he spent loan periods at Stockport and Chesterfield.

Ian signed for Cambridge United in February 1976 where he played for two seasons before returning North in July 1977 to sign for Rochdale.

Rochdale had a tough campaign in 1977-78 but Ian was a regular starter and in the summer Ian McNeil (the Wigan Athletic manager) added Ian to his squad for what was going to be the clubs first season in the Football League.

Ian began well as he scored in a pre-season friendly but he only made two appearances for the first team before moving into non-league football.

Ian enjoyed spells at Macclesfield Town and Runcorn in the Northern Premier League, Stalybridge Celtic and Newcastle KB United as well as playing for a time in Hong Kong.

Ian also found his creative roots as he penned a biography of Bolton and England full-back Tommy Banks.
