Ian started his career as a trainee at the club and at the start of his second year at the JJB Stadium he played two pre-season friendlies against St Helens Town and Leigh RMI in the pre season of 2001/2002.
He made his Latics League debut on 20th October 2001 when he played in the 2-3 defeat against Wrexham at the JJB Stadium.
By the end of season 2001/02 he had played 4+0 League games for the club without scoring.
He impressed manager Paul Jewell enough to offer him a one-year professional contract in May 2002 which he duly signed - Keiran Charnock and Paul Santus did likewise.
