Ronald William McIvor was born in Edinburgh on the 23rd of March 1951.

Ron made an impression on the football pitch at the age of 10 he featured in the Longstone Primary school side that won the Edinburgh Primary Schools Cup

As he got older Ron played for Carrickvale Secondary School and Longstone Boys Club.

Ron was also a very talented young boxer, winning Scottish Amateur titles at 14, 15 and 16 year old levels.

Ron decided to concentrate on his footballing talents and on leaving school he played for Peebles Rovers and the highly rated Junior club Bonnyrigg Rose F.C.

Like many players in Scotland Ron was on part-time forms and had to supplement any income with full time working. He studied to become an electrician and after passing various exams he took a job as an Approved Electrician working for Scottish and Newcasle breweries.

Scouts spotted Ron’s burgeoning footballing talent and he signed for East Fife where he stayed for seven seasons.  After clocking up nearly 200 appearances for the Fifers (178 League appearances), he was awarded a testimonial match for his service in November 1978.

In October 1979 Ron turned full-time when he moved South of the border to sign for Wigan Athletic. Ron made his Wigan debut on the 13th October 1979 when he netted Wigans only goal, a last minute consolation in a 3-1 defeat against Doncaster Rovers.

The move South didn’t really work for Ron and he returned to his native Scotland in 1980 and signed again for Bonnyrigg Rose.

Ron was one of four brothers and loved fishing and music, he even played in the Boys Brigade band……on the bagpipes!

Ron moved to Australia and played for Preston Macedonia on a number of occassions. He passed away in December 2021 at the age of 70.
