Sammy, an outside right, was born in New Seaham, Sunderland on 30th March 1908. He learned his football trade at Howden FC and Dawdon Colliery before signing for Carlile United in May 1930. After netting nineteen times in 76 outings for the Cumbrians he moved on to Chester City in June 1932.

His next port of call was Blackpool in January 1934 but after just four games for the Seasiders they loaned him to Latics wherer he scored 20 goals in 47 Cheshire Leage games, during which the Reds won their first ever League title, before signing for Leeds United in October1935.  Ironically, Sammy scored twice in an FA Cup game against his first League team Carlisle United in a 1-6 win, which is still a record win for a non league side away from home in the history of the competition.

His career was curtailed by World War Two during which he turned out for Middlesbrough twice and seven times for Luton Town.

He passed away in his hometown, Sunderland on 27th August 1958
